I want to use hyperterminal program to listen the serial port communication,
but it doesn't work. I don't have modem installed. My question is: do we
need to have modem installed to listen serial communication?
Please advise!

I use hyperterminal on my laptop to configure routers and switches. You
need a null modem cable. Here's an example of a null modem cable:
