'no connection to the internet is available'

my broadband connection has been working fine, and dialling up when I
clicked on IE. However now for some unknown reason when I try to connect in
this way it says 'no connection to the internet is available' the dial up is
selected and configured and works fine if I dial up from the connection icon
directly or use OE. Anyone know why this has happened now and how to remedy
it?

I had the same problem yesterday. I got the following advice from Malke,
Elephant Boy Computers:

Scan with a current anti virus program (not earlierthan 2002 and using
updated virus definitions). Anything showing ?
Also, remove spyware with Spybot Serach& Destroy www.security.kolla.de and
Ad-aware www.lavasoftusa.com . Be sure to update these before running. Best
to run these in safe mode (I could only manage this with Spybot, I had to
run the others in normal mode).

After this I used system restore to the date prior to the problem and
everything seems okay now.

On every call I've made lately where Internet connectivity has been the
issue, the cause has been spyware. Do the first steps of Windows
troubleshooting:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). Be sure to update these programs before running,
and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode.

Additionally, power-cycle your broadband modem. After you've done these
steps, if you still have the problem then please repost. Be sure to
include information about your connection (ISP, type of broadband,
etc.) and what you've done to troubleshoot.

Hi, James. If you are sure your computer is completely clean, then
perhaps you've installed something that is preventing your broadband
software from starting automatically. Some kind of firewall or popup
stopper, perhaps? There isn't any way for me to know this without
seeing your computer. What type of broadband are you using? Since you
referred to "dialing" I assumed an "instant-on" type of dsl with a
"connection manager". Is this correct? You may need to check the
settings on the connection manager with your ISP. Post back with more
details about your setup for more help.

Hi, James. Gosh, I really don't know then. Something had to change, but
what? Check your hosts file and see if anything has changed in
ZoneAlarm or in any of the other security programs. So you do use a
sort of dial-up to get connected? All I can suggest is to check those
settings (I'm not familiar with Freeserve's settings, although I've
heard of the company) and be sure there's no proxy. Maybe someone else
will come up with something. I'm sorry I couldn't.

New information to try - I asked the other MVP's this question, and they
suggested running LSP-Fix, which repairs the Winsock 2 settings. This
is a free program, so give it a try. Get it here:

I've actually used this to good effect; just forgot about it! Also, be
sure your Ad-aware and Spybot S&D are 1) the most recent versions; 2)
updated before you run them; 3) and since both programs are free, run
both - I find that each one complements the other.
