View Full Version : Product ID

I had a major virus problem and had to totally wipe the
system. Now I'm up and running again, but I've been told
that I have to re-activate my system. Apparently there
should have been a request for this, but I got none. I
called Microsoft and they want to know the product ID. I
have XP professional. I've searched everywhere on the MS
webpage and cannot find how to get the product ID. Please
Help!

Hi
You can find the Product ID by right clicking on My Computer and then =
selecting Properties. You should find a 20 digit number there.

Sam,
You can see your Product ID on the General tab of System applet in Control
Panel or the Properties of My Computer.
If you did not get an activation request it maybe because you are using a PC
with "BIOS Locked" media - often supplied by OEMs with their PCs which self
activate due to being tied to the BIOS.
If you are in any doubt about your activation status just do the following
Start ... Run ...
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

Hi
No, that is the Product Key - needed to install the software. The =
Product ID is a 20 numeric code that is needed to send to MS for any =
software problems.

Hi Mike
Your reply is OK, but this a the 'newusers' NG. A de-technical =
explanation might be appropriate in this case.
The following article by UK MVP Alex Nichol is helpful to all:
