I posted yesterday about problems connecting via IE - 'you are working
offline' popup - which prevented me connecting. I was still able to connect
via OE. Malke kindly gave me a solution, which I ran. Cleaned the system
with Norton Anti Virus, Spybotand Ad-aware. (could only use spybot in safe
mode) Got rid of a few bits of rubbish which seemed innocous, did a restore,
everything worked - I posted a message saying everything was ok - then I
switched off the computer.
Came back to it a few hours later and when I switched on the problem was
back.

Malke, you asked what ISP I was using - it is BTinternet.

If you have any solution I'd appreciate it if you'd e-mail me personally as
the messages on this group move so fast I cant keep track of them and I'm
afraid I'll lose the answer !

thanks in advance

Hi, Don. No, I don't provide free email support - sorry. This way
answers benefit everyone who uses this newsgroup. Unfortunately, there
seems to be a rash of problems with IE connecting over the last few
days. Someone suggested it might be related to a recent Windows Update
security update, but I don't have firm knowledge of that. You might
want to post in one of the MS newsgroups dedicated to IE. Here's a link
with all the MS newsgroups: http://aumha.org/nntp.htm

As another topic, you can set OE to download more messages and you can
also flag the ones you're interested in. That way, you won't lose
track. Sorry I don't have an answer for you.

New information to try - I asked the other MVP's this question, and they
suggested running LSP-Fix, which repairs the Winsock 2 settings. This
is a free program, so give it a try. Get it here:

http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm

I've actually used this to good effect; just forgot about it! Also, be
sure your Ad-aware and Spybot S&D are 1) the most recent versions; 2)
updated before you run them; 3) and since both programs are free, run
both - I find that each one complements the other.

Let me know if this works.

How did that PREVENT you from connecting. It simply sounds like yer
just not connected at that point.

More than likely, because you have OE set up do dial if yer not
connected. You can set up IE that way also if you so desire.

I'm assuming you DO have a dial-up connection...and not broadband.

Have a nice week...

I installed the latest update and found that internet connectivity was
markedly reduced. Un-installed it, and all was back to normal.
This is the ONLY patch I have ever had trouble with!

Thanks a million everyone, I'll be working on it over the next couple of
days. Sorry about the 'personal reply' thing, I realise now that I can track
the message with the spectacles thing.
