I have a pc running Windows XP Home Edition with an 80Gb hard drive in
NTFS format. Using Partition Magic I created a 50Mb logical partition
in FAT32 format and installed Boot Magic into this. I then created a
5Gb hidden partition in FAT32 format in order to load Windows 98 so
that my son can still play his older games.
When I make the new 5Gb partition active and the XP partition hidden
and try to install Windows 98 I get a message saying that set up has
found non MS-DOS operating system files on my computer, I am asked if
I want to remove the files or continue without. If I chose to remove
files I then have the choice of removing the partition and configuring
the disc or exiting. If I continue without removing, I then get
another warning saying that the OS may be disabled if I continue, when
I continue I am given the choice of formatting the C drive or exiting
set up, I exit. I do understand that the hidden partition becomes the
C drive when it is made active. I have even disabled Boot Magic and
hidden its partition, made the new partition active and booted from
the Win98 CD just to make sure that I have been in the correct
partition but with the same results, I returned to the Windows XP
partition using the Partition Magic rescue disks.
When I browse the new partition using Partition Magic the File Browser
window shows it to be empty however the Partition List says that 9.8Mb
have been used in this partition, is this the problem and if so how
did they get there and can they safely be destroyed?
I do hope that someone out there can help, I am a bit of a novice at
the behind the seines stuff. I haven't started shouting at the
computer yet but I am terrified of wiping Windows XP and all the
settings that go with it.
