My laptop all of a sudden needs an adminsitrators
password -- I never set one but it won't let me past the
sign on screen - help.....

Have you tried pressing enter?

Try safe mode then the admin account or another account besides yours if
there is one. If a password was used during setup it is useless when in
safemode. Goodluck
