No notice that printer is off

I recently obtained a new PC with Windows XP and IE 6.0.
My old PC used Win 95 and later Win 98 and always gave me
a message whenever I tried to print and the printer was
off. With XP, it doesn't give me any indication that my
printer is off, so like a dummy, I sit here until I
realize that it is off. Is there some option that I
should change? I couldn't find any with the help.

Why are you turning off your printer? I dont' think XP supports that
option.
