I upgraded my PC from Win98 SE to XP Professional. When I turn on the computer and it starts Win XP it stays on the black Win XP screen with the bar moving across the bottom for approx 2 and 1/2 min. After this time, it loads up an I have no issues. This P
C is a stand alone family PC, no networking with a modem for internet conductivity. 800 meg, 256K RAM. Why does it take so long at start up? I use several other Win XP machines and none of them do this.

You need to see what programs and processes are starting with Windows.
You may have had too many things starting with Win98 and that has
carried over to WinXP, and then WinXP has a lot more processes. Here
are links to help you determine what things are in your startup (use
msconfig just like in Win98 to see what is starting up):
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm (look up programs)
http://www.blackviper.com/ (learn about processes)
