View Full Version : HP LaserJet will not print after upgrading to XP

I have a HP LaserJet 6P attached to the printer port of a
Dell Dimension XPS T700 with 640M of memory. Yesterday, I
upgraded the OS from Win 98 SE to Windows XP Home edition.
Before upgrading, the printer worked fine. After installing
XP, the printer would not print. Documents show up in the
spooler window, but notheing prints. Eventually, I get a
timeout message that the document did not print. I have
uninstalled the printer and reinstalled several times both
with the MS drivers and drivers downloaded from HP. There
have been no hardware changes on this system, the only
change is the upgrade to XP. I get no error messages except
the eventual timeout when the document fails to print. This
is not application specific, no apps will print, including
the "print test page" option from the properties window.
Any clues would be appreciated.

You probably did not disconnect the printer before doing the upgrade.
Although you're on the right track with uninstalling, you have to really
clean things out. See the directions here (from MS-MVP Cari):

Thanks, but unfortunately, I have already tried all of
that. I deleted the printer drivers as well as the printer
and installed new HP drivers.
I have also tried changing the parallel port settings in
the BIOS, but nothing has made a difference.

Quote from Bill: " I have uninstalled the printer and reinstalled several

Read this link. They say you need to load the driver for your printer from
the XP CD which will work with XP. The drivers on the HP site are not XP
compatable.

That's not what that article says. It says that hp and microsoft worked
together to produce drivers that are on the XP install CD, but that
these drivers may not provide all the features that the printers are
capable of. It says "HP LaserJet 4 series, 5 series, 6 series and 8500
printers may have drivers with added functionality available from the
product specific download pages on HP.COM." In fact, there is a pcl5e
driver for XP available on the hp site.

Yup you are correct, somehow I went to the wrong page when searching for the
driver. The one I went to listed only up to Win 2000 the first time. Oh
well.

>-----Original Message-----Thanks for the info. I have
tried both the drivers from the CD and the ones downloaded
from HP. Neither allow me to print locally. I have also
uninstalled and reinstalled the LPT port drivers, to no
avail. However, I attached the printer to another computer
and can print from XP across the network, but still not
locally. The network printer solution is not ideal because
the other computer is in our housemate's bedroom, so I'd
like to get this thing printing locally.

What OS is running on the "remote" PC? And I don't recall -- is the LJ 6p a parallel port-only printer or can it be connected via USB (and in
the latter case, how is it connected to the "remote" PC?)

On your "local" PC, what BIOS options are available for the parallel port (and which ones have you tried)?

Finally, if you haven't tried this already, try posting your problem in one of the hp forums linked from http://itrc.hp.com/ or
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/categoryhome.do?categoryId=413
