How can I place the shut down and stand by icons on desktop

Shutdown is easy enough: from a command Prompt window type shutdown ?
for a list of switches. You can either place a shortcut or the actual
exe file on the desktop if you wish but I've decided it's too dangerous
to have on my Desktop so have placed a shortcut in the Start menu
instead.

I don't know of any native command that will initiate Standby mode but
Wizmo will do so, along with Shutdown, Hibernate, Logoff, Restart etc,
etc. Just run it to read the instructions:
