Heres my problem, as of the last two weeks when I start
my computer it either freezes at the winxp boot screen or
it takes a very very long time to start and then when it
finally makes it all the way through start up it only
runs for about 20 to 30 commands, and then freezes. I
have found that when striking a random assortment of keys
consecutively it will come out of freeze, but again there
isn't any particular pattern of keys to strike and it
doesn't always come out of the freeze. Also something
else to note, I don't know if it is of any significance
to anyone, but it will usually go into the option of safe
mode start up and when you pick any one of the safe mode
options it will run through a list of files and it
freezes when it comes to a file that ends with apg440.
I'm at a complete loss as to how to get my computer to
work at the moment so if anyone has any ideas or
suggestions I would greatly appreciate a helping hand.

thanks Dru

need some more info...what kind of comp...what are you running on your comp
at startup? you can check this by going to : start, run type in msconfig
(enter) then go to the start up tab and it will show you what programs are
booting with your startup....Pierce

I've got a Dell laptop thats about four years old now,
its got a p2 400mhz, 384mb ram. The stuff I have running
at startup are norton system doctor, ms office, hotsync
manager, aim, msmsgs, qttask, hphupd04, hphmon04,
hpztsb05, navapw32, upd, tfswctrl, and point32. The last
few are programs that I'm not very familiar with though.

thanx in advance Dru

For delays before the icons appear on the Desktop use the Bootvis.exe =
tool -the download on the link page which follows:
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.asp

Otherwise I would look in Event Viewer at the logged errors.

1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click =
Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for =
system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in =
the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the =
error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).
=20
2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you =
should double click for further information and you can copy using copy =
and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", =
which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article =
containing a suggested solution.

There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.=20

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and =
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears =
is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close =
Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the =
body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer =
Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the =
first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place =
a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and =
use it to remove parasites.

How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Remove Temporary Internet Files by selecting Start, Control Panel, =
Internet Options, General tab, Delete Files and check box for "Delete =
all offline content".

4. Empty Recycle Bin.

5. Run Disk Defragmenter.=20

~~~~~~
Hope this helps.
