black screen-error message

upon turning on my computer today, it displayed the
manufacturers splash screen and then displayed a black
screen with the error message: "no operating system found".
i have not installed any new software or hardware. what
could be the problem and how should i proceed to
troubleshoot it?

it is still under warranty (i also purchased a service
contract), so should i just contact the retailer.

If it's still under warranty, then get it serviced. May be something simple,
but I would not want to recommend anything that may void your warranty.
