Please loose the Cap Lock.

C: must be formatted NTFS and D: was formatted Fat 32.
Dos will not see NTFS, so it formatted the drive that was visible (D:).

Have you tried the following procedure?

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE.
Click on DISK MANAGEMENT and in the lower right-hand
window (gray shaded area), right-click on your second drive
and select INITIALIZE DISK.

If that does not work:

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
In the Command Prompt window, type: DISKPART , hit enter.
Then type: RESCAN , hit enter.
Try initializing the disk again.

e-mail me at d_draper at pacbell dot net, and I can POSSIBLY recover
your drive/data... Drive is not an issue, data will require some more
work. I have the utilities, and I will return the drive to you, with
your information on a CD. If I cannot recover it, I will not charge
you. Let me know what you want to do... Be sure you identifiy
yourself as the guy who formatted his drive, otherwise your mail may
be deleted by my server... My spam watcher sometimes inadvertantly
does that.

email me at d_draper at pacbell dot net, and I can also help you
out... IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DO NOTHING TO YOUR HARD DRIVE AT THIS
TIME! If all you have done is format it, then the data is likely
recoverable. e-mail me first, and let's see what we can do for you.

Too late... he already copied data from a 3 year old backup to his
formatted drive. I've informed him that some data can stil be recovered,
but the chances are much less now. If he had listened to all the warnings
to not do anything to his drive, you or I could have easily recovered nearly
100% of his data.

I guess you have learned a valuable lesson: Back up your critical
info, like documents. . If you have a floppy drive in your computer,
documents don't take up that much space and can easily be backed up
(copied to).

Or if you no floppy drive, and just have a read/write CD, you can
still use that. Blank CDs nowadays are free if you find a good rebate
sale. (I just bought a 100 pack of Memorex CDs and a 100 pack of
jewel cases, and after the in-store instant rebates, and mail-in
rebates, it costs me nothing. 0. Nada. Actually, I even profited
one cent, though minus of course the two stamps to send in the
mail-ins.)

Programs you have CD, or stuff you can download again isn't as
important to back up.

And obviously you are a newbie. In using these newsgroups anyway:
Using all capital letters is a no-no. It means you are shouting.
Well.... maybe you are freaking out and shouting.

You should have used the bootable WinXP cd instead of old
dos. There are companies that specialize in data recovery
but I'm told it cost big bucks(?).

Do nothing more on the affected computer. The data is still there and
may be recovered with data recovery software. Take your computer to a
good local computer shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) AFTER
you first call to be sure the shop can do this. Good data recovery
software is expensive and not everyone has it. If there is nothing
available in your area, contact a professional data recovery firm like
Drive Savers. I do not work for them, but I recommend them as they are
very highly regarded in the tech industry. Their US phone number is
800-440-1904, www.drivesavers.com. Their services are not inexpensive,
usually starting at around $500, but only you can decide how much your
data is worth.
