I have two Copies of Windows XP installed on a single computer in a dual
boot configuration. My primary installation shows a "Language Bar" on rhe
"View, Toolbars" submenu. My second installation does not show such an
item. My problem is that the item is awfully persistent. Each time I boot
the system, it comes up with the item:
"View, Toolbars, Language Bar"
reactivated (checked). Several Icons appear on the Windows Taskbar. What
is particularly annoying is that there is an additional toolbar with buttons
for 'microphones' and 'tools' floating in mid-screen. I cannot permanetly
disable these images. If I manage to disable the images, the next time I
reboot they reappear. I have read several books written by Microsoft
personnel on Windows XP. I have not seen anything on 'Language Bar" in any
of the documents. A search of the microsoft knoledgebase also draws a
blank.

Control Panel> Regional and Language Options.
On the Languages page, click Details. The next screen has a "Language Bar"
button where you can setup your preferences for this tool.
Alternatively (or in addition), you could use the Advanced page from this
same set of screens and turn off Advanced Text Services for all programs.
I think the reason information for the Language Bar is sketchy is that
Windows XP only includes some basic functions for this tool. The
installation of other MS programs, such as Office, will enhance the basic
functionality. Management then becomes a joint effort between the operating
system and applications.
If you use Help and Support while you're online to search for "Language
Bar," you should get about 37 results in the list. A little less than half
will be articles from the MS Knowledge Base that expand on the basic
information in the Windows XP help topics.
