Can I set windows to reopen file browser dialogues to sort by date or by size instead of whatever the default is?

No. The "open" and "save as" dialog boxes are not customizeable.

That pretty much blows... I mean of course you have the option to change the way it looks while you are in one but no-one would want it to stay that way when they come back to it?!?!? I mean when I park my car somewhere I expect it to be where I left it...
. not back in the lot of car dealership where I purchased it.

Maybe this is on the to-do-list for further versions of Windows. There
already has be a huge number of complaints about this limitation here.

I use an Explorer-replacement program called Directory Opus that can do what
you want, in addition to a TON of other things we all wish Explorer could
do. Perhaps you could download the trial version http://www.gpsoft.com.au/
and give it a whirl. Prepare to be amazed!
