application error message

If I try to use my inspiron 8100 w/o the DSL cable
plugged in, I get a DLL.exe application error box. Then
the hour glass flickers next to the cursor and everything
freezes up. I've scanned for virus' and trogens and it
says my system is clean. Any suggestions on what is going
on and what to do about it?
