pics with red crosses

A friend is having a lot of trouble receiving pics from
people and more often than not the pics are blank with a
red cross in the corner.
I also sometimes receive the same from other people. Is
it an XP thing because I don't recall win98 having the
same problem.
Any suggestions please? :)

It sounds as though you haven't got the latest Visual
Basic runtime files.

First, make sure if the "Show Pictures" option is turned
on in Advanced tab
of Internet Options.
If it is already on, refer this MSKB article:

This problem is also seen in computers where Norton
Internet Security
Ad-blocks is turned on.
