DOS application compatibility with XP

How do I run DOS applications on XP Home SP1?

I've all these really grat games but can't seem to be
able to install most of them, and the ones I managed to
install don't run. I tried setting compatibility to all
the other Windows versions but none of them work.

Shouldn't they run better, instead of not at all? I've
more ram, faster cpu, supposedly better os and since I
bought this darn thing it's caused me nothing but
headaches.

XP was not built ontop of DOS. If the games dont work using the
compatibility feature, then they are not going to work in XP.
