The standby button at the left of the close down menu is
grayed out. Why?
- seems to have something to do with my changing power
options in BIOS and control panel/display settings -
tried everything to do with power settings, but very few
options!!
Please help.

Hi Michael,
Tried resetting the defaults? PM should be disabled in the system BIOS in
order to use the Win-based PM settings. Not doing so generally arises in
conflicts which cause neither to function correctly.

That happened to me, Michael, after I had installed generic Windows video
drivers (because I had uninstalled a bad nVidia upgrade).
After I reinstalled my OEM drivers, the Stand By button reappeared.
A possible cause.

BIOS is short for Basic Input/Output System, BIOS is a chip located on all
computer motherboards that contains instructions and setup for how your
system should boot and how it operates.
A. Prime Meridian
B. Permanent Magnet
C. Preventive Maintenance
D. Power Mangement
E. None of the above
What stanbdy button?

Wesley,
I had a similar "greyed out STANDBY" problem. Let me expand the question a
bit...
- I have an HP Pavillion zd7000 with WinXP Home.
- It seemed to working fine until I tried to install SP2 (several months
ago).
- I worked with HP and MS in an attempt to resolve problems with no luck
and eventually reformatted and reinstalled XP.
- Recently I decided to try SP2 again but thought I should do a backup
before "messing things up" again.
Question 1: Where is the "Backup" utility? I went to Start/ Programs/
Accessories/ System Tools but it wasn't there! I wandered around a bit in
various directories/folders and even did a search for any file with "backup"
in the name with no luck. Where is it, or, does MS have a reliable version
of the Backup utility posted somewhere?"
Question 2: It is important to me that my laptop goes to "hibernate" (or
"standby") when I close the lid. After installing XP SP2 (several month ago
as mentioned above) I had several problems including...
- When I would shut down the computer, I would go to Start/Turn Off
Computer and you get the "Turn Off Computer" window with three
buttons/choices a.) Standby, b.) Turn Off, and, c.) Restart (i.e., your reply
below asks, "What standby button?"). The "Standby" button was greyed out and
you were not able to select it (I assume this is the same problem referenced
here by 'immakrmboyie').
- In "Power Options" the "Hibernate" tab was completely removed - I could
find no hibernate options anywhere. And,
- The only way to turn the machine off was via the Power button.
Otherwise, the machine would go into perpetual "Restart". (I noticed another
user sent a query re: Perpetual Reboot!) So...
Do you know if there have resolutions to these problems?
When I was dealing with this several months ago the discussions and FAQ's I
read made me suspect these problems were unique to HP - but I'm no longer
convinced it is just an HP problem! Thanks for your help, DasFische

DasFische,

NTBackup is not installed with XP Home, but it's on the XP CD. Unless you
have an OEM CD. In that case read on.
HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition

You can download NTBackup here:

> Question 2
Do you have the *latest* XP compatible video card drivers installed?
Open Power Options Properties...
Start | Run | Type: powercfg.cpl | OK |
Hibernate tab
If the Hibernate tab is unavailable, your computer does not support this
feature.
To put your computer into hibernation, you must have a computer
whose components and BIOS support this option.
I.e. the BIOS and video drivers.
Do you have an APM tab on Power Mangement?

Use Hibernate and Standby to Conserve Batteries

This may be worth a shot...
Notebook has STANDBY button "greyed out":after Windows XP Home recovery.

When you click “Turn Off Computer” on the Start menu, the Hibernate button
does not appear in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or in Windows XP Tablet PC
