Messenger Sign-In Problem

I've recently downloaded the new MSN Messenger 6.1 - yet
the old Windows Messenger keeps signing me in
automatically every time I connect to the internet.

I have removed the old Messenger from my components list
in Add/Remove Programs, checked my start-up folder (which
is empty), deactivated the protect messenger option in
Norton Antivirus and ensured that "allow auto sign in"
and "auto run messenger" are de-activated in 6.1.

Now I have disabled .NET passport within my User Account
settings and that has stopped the old messenger from
signing in automatically... but now I have to manually log
in to MSN Messenger by typing my email address and
password. If I tick the "Sign in automatically" box I get
the problem all over again... so I can't win!

Me thinks it's something to do with the User Account/.NET
Passport.... any ideas?

Please help... it's SO frustrating!

Save your password, and then reboot to see if the problem is gone.

Hi Jonathan.

Thanks for that link... I tried the download and it's not
worked.

It seems as though the old Messenger is still running
secretly in the background or something. Maybe the
problem is related to MSN! Whenever I connect to the
internet it signs me in but shows NO notifications. I
only realise when a message from a friend pops up, or if I
sign in using MSN 6.1 ( then a message pops up saying "net
passport messenger service has signed you out because you
have signed in at another location".

Any thoughts?

I believe I have solved the problem... thanks to your
website (Jonathan)!

I downloaded the file to completely remove Windows
Messenger and that seems to have sorted it.

So, if you get messages from others with the same or
similar problem as me (having just installed MSN Messenger
6.1) this could well be the answer.

You know, I don't know if that was a good idea. I read that Windows
Messenger is used by other stuff to function. The guy below
identifies typed 3 different things. Note that his method of going
into add/remove then windows components is the only one I've heard of
doing it that way. If you've tried the link for the stopping of it
loading with IE at start-up and it didn't work (???), then try his
method. But you should get it back on your system first (according to
this):

You can completely remove Windows Messenger (4.7) but if you do, you
will be preventing:
Remote Assistance
Whiteboard,
Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize Messenger
from working (or loading without problems).

Instead (and this should solve your problem), you should simply
disable it. To do so, open it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences
tab and un checking 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run
Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version).

As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel,
Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on the left,
uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list and click Next >.
Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service
Pack 1 -- if you haven't, visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way.

I've noticed that even though I have run that utility that is supposed
to stop it from loading with IE, the box is still checked. However,
it also says 00 after it - I don't know the significance of this. I
hope it is now working like I want it to (don't know yet) by not being
loaded when I start IE.
