I have two computers, nearly new, and each with XP.
One prints great on my Canon printer, the other will
print a great test page after I've reinstalled the
printer, but then begins to print garbage with one or two
lines per page till it runs out of gas.

Possibly, they do not both have the correct Canon driver?
You may want to download the xp-current driver from Canon.
And, check your settngs, if you haven't yet done so.
