View Full Version : Thumbs down to xp

Is it just me???
Does anyone else find xp to be really really irritating?
I am tired of pop up boxes appearing from the corner of my
screen at odd moments, Tired of xp constantly trying to
automate things when I put in a CD (which often interfers
with the programme I actually want to use the cd with) but
most of all I am totally sick of things not working
because they were installed by someone else (even tho I am
down as an administrator), and by the time the IT guys
have rejigged my user account, no matter how hard they try
to make sure they've copied everything over, I always lose
some customized settings on my programmes and it wastes so
much time resetting. There's a difference between
security and paranoia and most of the stuff built into xp
for security definitely falls onto the paranoia side of
the line. If my computer is off line for some reason it
stupid that I can't work at another because I don't have
an account on it; it's a waste of time all round to have
to get someone from IT to set one up, not all companies
need that level of security. Is it possible to switch it
off?
Sorry, don't mean to rant but I have lost 2.5 hours today
because of xp's little foibles

This can be disabled. Obviously, it's intended for new users, although I
can understand your frustration.

This too can be disabled, although most of the time when I insert a CD,
it's because I want it to run.

This is your IT guys' problem.

Gee, this is real inconvenient. How often do you get a new PC? Weekly?

It's when new things don't work properly they have to mess

If it helps you understand the rant, the council IT guys
are in another building and don't really have much to do
with us. Up till now we've always been able to figure most
stuff out for ourselves rather than get someone over for
little bits and bobs. but Xp has us beat. It is really not
user friendly unless you have a degree in computing.

That's because you are supposed to use it not configure it.

Ask the IT people to set up roaming profiles and you can log on any =
computer to your account.

Perhaps if you IT people used inbuilt tools that were in earlier =
versions as well they'd copy your profile.

Perhaps if you don't install faulty programs they'd install for All =
Users. Anyway Programs can be pushed per user (they even follow you to =
machines that you've never logged on to and where it's not installed, =
automatically at logon).

To use CD without Autorun. Hold down Shift key when inserting CD until
light on CD drive goes out.

Prehaps ypour company needs to hire real IT people. Sounds to me like you have an
incompentant IT team which means your system is open to Idiot users that have no clue
breaking things and installing virus's, Variuos Hacker Exploits, and lost/corrupted
data.

A true IT person would have your network locked down so that the users can't make
changes, Would have roaming profiles set-up, and know how to use transfer and
Settings copy configuration from machine to machine. Hell, I cn do it and I have no
cerifications.

on council wages? not a chance. The guy on hand in the
office is doing his best but it's new to him too, and the
IT dept haven't decided yet whether to train him in xp,
(assuming that is they've had training themselves). That
would cost money!

Council Wages? You mean as in a Town Council or something?? Even more
important that you have a competant IT Guy.

Training? What trainer?? All it takes is a few brain cells and the
ability to read the Help & Support. Awareness of these newsgroups helps
too. I have never had any training and I can do a better job then he can.
