View Full Version : Upgrade from Win 95

I'm confused about why the XP upgrade doesn't work for Win 95. My sister
has an older computer with 95, I went to CompUSA to purchase the XP upgrade,
and was told it won't work. Is this a technical issue or is Microsoft just
going for more $$? Thanks.

Most 95 systems aren't capable of running XP - if the system was bought with
95, then it's running 8 year old technology. I have an old laptop (P166,
16MB, 1GB, 1MB graphics) - do you think XP will run on that (hint - XP needs
1.5GB for a minimum installation)? 95-XP is not a valid upgrade path
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/matrix.asp).
However, a retail 95 CD will work as a qualifying product /FOR A CLEAN
INSTALLATION ONLY/. It will not work if you attempt to install over the top.
You need to make sure your daughter's system meets all the requirements
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/sysreqs.asp).
128MB RAM is the minimum, but I can tell you that Windows needs 256MB to be
useable. As it has no 'system resource' requirements like 95 the more RAM
the better, as XP will utilise every byte.
If you're sure it does, then you can go ahead with the installation.

You can't upgrade to Windows XP over the top of a Windows 95
installation. However you *can* do a clean Windows XP
installation with the upgrade CD, and insert the Windows 95 CD as
qualifying media when prompted to do so.

Not sure I understand. What is the difference between a a clean
installation and an upgrade.
Thanks,

A clean installation wipes the disk clean, installs the operating
system, and starts from scratch. Nothing that used to be on the
disk remains there.
An upgrade keeps your data, your installed programs, etc. and
installs on top of what used to be there.
