After reloading XP Pro SP1 the standby option is disabled
on my computer. Also, there are no icons on my desktop
other than the recycle bin. Everything else *seems* to be
fine. Whats up with that?

Hi Johnny,
First, it is normal for a clean install of Windows XP to show only the
Recycle Bin on the Desktop. Mine did the same thing. You can decide what
other icons you want on your Desktop.
As to the Stand By button, the usual suspect is inadequate video drivers. If
you let Windows install the generic VGA drivers, you won't get the Stand By
function. That's why new computers come with drivers from the video card
manufacturer.
If you have an OEM CD you can probably load the drivers from it. If not, go
to the Website of the video card manufacturer and download the drivers for
your model. You will then see the Stand By function enabled.
