I selected Link (the Cat) as my favorite Office XP assistant. However I
cannot find it in my Office XP Operating System (for search, for example).
Where is it?????

A lot of the 'office assistant' characters are not installed by default.
After you chose the Cat did office actually install the cat character? I
don't use the office assistant but I have just gone through the procedure
and upon selecting the office assistant a message appeared saying that the
office assistant plug-in wasn't installed and that office needed to install
it. (help>show the office assistant) The next thing I did was select the Cat
as the office assistant from the character list. Once again a message
appeared to say it wasn't installed do I want to install it. After answering
'yes' the Cat was installed.
I suggest you open an Office application, I.e., Word etc and then click on
Help in the main toolbar. From the drop down menu look to see if 'Show the
office assistant' is visible. if it is click on it and the office assistant
should rush to do your bidding.

Run Office Setup. Select the option to add components. Go through the
choices to find Links the C. Make the necessary choices to install it and
follow the on screen prompts to complete.

I am NOT speaking of Office. I have Link in Office. I wish to have it on
WinXP Search too! I cannot find a way.... :(

Okay, okay! You do need it installed first. Since you have Links in Office
it is installed. Open Search. Then click on the dog. A new menu appears.
One of the choices is "Choose a different animated character."
PS: I use Links the Cat in Office and in Search instead of the dog too.

I know. That's the point. I'm sorry if I was not able to explain my problem
correctly. English is not my first language. I have Link in Office XP but,
when I try to change animated character in Search, Link is not available
among possible options. It looks like XP is looking in two different places
for animated characters depending if it is intended for Search or for
Office. I hope I was clear now. :-)

No need to apologize :)
Using Links as the search character, my registry shows the following in
this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\Actor\<path to
OFFCAT.ACS>
Replace <path to OFFCAT.ACS> with the path that is relevant to your file
locations.
Also, there was an update for Search Assistant. See the following article:
Error Message: "A File That Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be
Found"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=319949
May want to try editing the registry key first (back up the key before
changing it) and check to see if you have that update installed.
If you decide to try reinstalling search assistant (using the srchasst.inf
file), double check the file version information for srchui.dll after the
reinstall. You want it to match the version/date that's mentioned in the MS
Knowledge Base article. If it doesn't, reapply that update.
