View Full Version : Windows XP - User Accounts -BUGS?

Hi,
In XP User Accounts I wanted to not login daily using an Administrator
account for security, therefore I created another account and made it
a Computer Administrator and then changed the original Computer
Administrator account to have limited access. Well it doesn't work.
In User Accounts each time I change either of those two accounts to
have limited access, they always default back to Computer
Administrator level access, when I exit and enter the User Accounts
program.
My XP Home Edition machine is completely up to date with all patches.
I don't know why this is happening, does anyone know the answer?
Thanks,
Dave

That's how its supposed to be. XP always has a hidden administrator account
that always has admin rights and can't be changed. This is a fail-safe
account, one that can be used in emergencies when your normal user account
doesn't work. Then you set up a user accounts for yourself. One user account
you setup, besides the hidden admin account, *must* be an administrator as
well. So you will also have at least two user accounts that have admin
rights on the computer at once. One a daily user and one the backup hidden
user. This is normal with nt based systems.

I can't tell you why they revert; I've never seen or heard of that one, but:
You /WANT/ two accounts with Administrator privileges. Accounts do get
corrupted; it can be overcome only by using another Administrator account.

Why not just use the original "Adminstrator" as admin account and
create a new limited account? This works perfectly for me.

M$'s patches would never fix problems like this.

Maybe the "Adminstrator" just can't be changed?

I have another related question. I finally figured out
the issue as you have explained it. I had the same
experience as Dave. Now, however, i have a new issue.
when i move a limited user account into a power user
group, that user can no longer use IE. There are no
error messages, it just never displays a
site...regardless of the address typed in. everything
else works fine. once taken out of the power user group,
IE works again. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mitch

I have the same problem. It just happened yesterday. I put my wifes account
back into my switch identities box and it works fine. There is some loss of
messages stored by her .If I try to go back to her desktop OE won't work at
all.
