It's crazy, I've done everything I can think of but when I run Norton anti virus to scan the disc it reaches the C:\I386 directory, scans for a while then just shuts off abruptly. I'm running XP Pro and this laptop is a Gateway 600XL. Actually I have two
of them and love them. XP has been great too. This particular laptop had worked fine for months then developed this problem. I've run PC Doctor, Norton, Scan disk and right now I have a scf /scannow running against it. I've discovered that if I try to
scane the I386 folder it triggers the power down after being there for a while. Anyone have anything like this happen?
Thanks for any help,
Paul D.

Hi PJD,
You might check with Gateway. I know that SFC is only recommended on =
HP's as a last resort. Does your Recovery Disks have two alternatives? =
If so, you can try the "repair" System Recovery. That will replace all =
of your operating system and leave the data and settings alone. There is =
a possibility that you may have a power supply problem. Also it the CPU =
get too hot, it can cause a shutdown also.
