I have a sound card in my system that appears to work properly. For
example I can go into the sound part of control panel and play any
system sounds. The problem is it appears it won't play the system
sounds at many points in programs. For example in Windows Messenger
when a new email comes in instead of playing the usual sound it just
makes a beep on the computer's speaker. The same thing happens in
Outlook XP when a new email comes in. It just uses the computers
speaker for a beep. This didn't happen until a few days ago. Any
idea what is going on?

I have a similar problem.

MS Money refuses to use my Creative sound card and beeps on the mobo sounder
(I can't bring myself to call it a speaker). EVERY other application I have
and the OS seems to use the sound card just fine. Now I know sound isn't
exactly critical to MSMoney but it is wierd and it did work just fine on my
Win98 PC (I mean the Win98 version of Money running on Win98 was ok but
Money2002 which is XP certified running on WinXP isn't). Perhaps it's
calling some DOS code that isn't there anymore on XP (if that makes any
sense?).
