View Full Version : Explorer Locks up Constantly

Hi - I've been experiencing a rather annoying problem
with XP Pro runnind on a Dell 8200 series. For no
particular reason, the entire explorer portion of windows
will freeze - I cannot click on the start menu or any of
the other windows - they are all frozen. I can however
still move the mouse accross the screen. After several
minutes of just leaving the machine alone, all of the
actions I performed while the machine was in this state
occur on the screen in a matter of seconds - as if the
machine is catching up with itself. I have a 2.0 GHZ
machine with 768 MB of Ram and tried to reinstall XP Pro
twice. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on
or what I can do to resolve this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you have network connections that might not be available? Drive letters
mapped to remote resources?
I'm experiencing a problem similar to yours, and I think it is related to
the network issues.

Yes - actually, I do. I am connected to a server here.
Thats an interesting idea. You think that might be
causing the problem?

I have been having this problem intermittently.
Really frustrating that task manager won't even come up. And letting windows close
the applications (when that is even an option) just locks up the comp that much longer
waiting for it to write the stupid report to microsoft. At least a hundred hung apps, and
error reports, and not one automated response from them. I'm turning off error reporting.
Now I automatically open extra Internet Explorer windows, so when one locks up I can
minimize it and open another window for browsing (this works about half of the time.)
So half of the time (I guess) it's not the whole application, just the one window locked up.
Interesting about network mapping, just today I discovered how to eliminate that
'network cable unplugged' icon in my system tray by opening network connections
and disabling my unused LAN connection (which came installed with the ethernet card)
by right clicking and selecting 'disable,' I wonder whether this will prevent the lockups.
Anyway, I've just about eliminated everything that could be causing it, the only thing
left is to assume the cpu temperature is too high, my bios doesn't have a 'health' tab
where I could discover the current cpu temperature. My fan also quits upon shutdown,
aren't they supposed to have a thermostat to keep them running after shutdown?
I keep thinking that if it were the temp. it wouldn't just lock one window,
but that is not always the case, often the whole computer freezes (or overheats?)
I'll post back here if a new fan fixes it.
