Hoping to gain resolution of my XP machine constantly freezing up. For the most part the behavior seems to be triggered by 'save as'. It doesn't really matter what application I'm using, but 95% of the time I try to save as, the machine locks up as soon
as the dialogue box comes up to allow me to specifiy where and how I want to save. At this point it takes numerous (15 0r more)attempts to end the program with or without Task Manager, and watching CPU behavior while this is happening shows CPU usage all
over the place(24%-99%). Additionally, I can no longer type in a URL in IE, with using http://, and I've read about disabling file find. It does not seem to matter if fille find is enabled or diabled. At this point the machine is pretty much useless. M
y Updates are up to date, and i have not changed any hardware since before XP was installed. CPU Athlon 1.66GHz, RAM 256MB, HD 30GB, about 2/3 used. I have tried restoring to an earlier date 4 times, to no avail. I have tested the stability of the RAM a
nd the HD, and they both check out fine. I have run Asus Probe on the system, I do not have a heat issue. CPU, RAM MB all are running at the low end of the allowable temperature range. THe machine is free of viruses and adware, malware, spyware, etc.
This machine had been in service running Win98SE, prior to installing XP for about 6 months, and was very stable and dependable.
Have any of you experts out there seen this behavior, and know what is causing it and how to correct the problem?

Are you able to see the contents of "my computer" and see the contents of
all the drives it contains?
is the floppy controller working properly ?

This happened to one of my computers. I had a network drive mapping to a
(secure) server. One day it didn't show up in the My Computer list or in the
Disconnect Network Drive list, and the computer would freeze up whenever I
did a Save As, even to the My Documents folder.
But the mapping showed up when I did a Net Use at the command prompt. I was
able to remove the mapping using Net Use d: /delete where d: was the network
drive letter, and all was better.
Perhaps something like this is messed up in your computer.

Yes, and yes. All drives appear in explorer, none are disconnected. Floppy works fine.

No, I checked and there is nothing liek what you described going on. We haven't changed any mapping or any drives on the server since a year ago, way before I installed XP. One other thing that is rather curious about this behavior, though. When I open
Task Manager when the application freezes, there are always two instances of the frozen application, both of which show 'not responding'. It takes many tries of 'end progam' to both instances to back out of the problem.
