99% of the time lockups are because you are still using
the generic XP drivers. You need to go to each of the
manufacturers sites for your hardware. Modem\mouse\sound
card\video card\monitor and so on and get and install the
XP drivers. Also while you state that you have 386MB of
RAM and this is sufficient for you needs it may in fact
not be. In this day and age of heavy RAM using programs
and exceptional graphic needs the norm is fast becoming
512MB of RAM as a minimum. RAM is cheap and is by far the
best thing to add to your machine to boost performance and
stability. You need also to be sure and run regular
(weekly) error checking and defragmentation as well. You
can get programs like XTEQ Systems X-Setup which is by far
the most powerful tweaking tool on the market today for
XP. You can tweak over 1200 settings and it's free.
Another good program to aid in cleaning up the OS and in
particular the Registry which is usually left alone by
cleanup apps is JV16 Power Tools. This will clean your
registry as well as any temp files. It's also free.
Another excellent product to help keep your sytem humming
along is SpyBot Search and Destroy. This not only finds
any spyware\adware added to your system when surfing but
also allows you to clean out history files, cookie files,
and even stream history. Again it's free. If you need more
help feel free to e:mail me.Good luck.
