Is there something which "protects" the registry?

Seems i keep fighting a battle against the microsoft gnomes in the
machine. Quit often things are "returned" to their previous setting in
the registry (and windows genrally)

For instance i don't want zip folders, so I do:

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll


this works for a while. But sometime later it has been put in effect
again.

Is there some sort of Big Borther setup which thinks that people don't
really know what they want and set things back the way they were??

Did you delete the two copies of zipfldr.dll after unregistering it? If
not, the next time you try to open a zip file it will be re-registered.

Even if i use another program to open zip files? No i didn't deleted it,
i didn't think it would be necessary. But perhaps it is.
