I just started using Outlook Express for my newsgroups, and so far I'm quite
satisfied. Since it's on your computer as part of Windows XP anyhow, why
don't you read the Help file, and see what you can learn.

Manny;
Sounds like excellent advice to me. Sadly, many copies of Windows XP have
shipped without the Help and Support option.

Hello Wes,
| many copies of Windows XP have
| shipped without the Help and Support option.
Does your XP include "Step By Step Interactive" help
which is invoked by "Practice:" topics in
[Start] | Help and Support |, or is launched from
[Start] | Programs | Accessories | MS Interactive Training
It is on my OEM XP Pro.

Try here for configuring OE:

And here to learn about Usenet:

And here to munge your email address, thus avoiding lots of SPMM:

Hello Jan;
Thanks for the reply, but I think you missed the sarcasm of my reply. What
I meant was that since a large number of people come here to ask questions,
that are easily answered with Help, they must NOT have Help and Support on
their machines. Half of what I post as answers is copied and pasted from Help.
To answer your question. I use the Classic Start Menu. Start/Help and
Support/type topic/ENTER/choose from list/click/read/done.
Wes ;o)
I see you are in the same time zone as I am. Are you in the US or Canada?

Hello Wes,
I was wondering if *anybody* is aware of the existence of
"Step By Step Interactive" training which is included
with Windows XP.
Whenever I post detailed answers, it is because those
answers are *not* easy to locate in "Help & Support".
Otherwise, I just give brief directions into H & S.
How/where do you see I am in the same time zone as you
are? The date/time-stamp on posts is based on the local
time in Redmond, Washington, USA (deduced from comparing
date/time-stamp on my posts with the actual time I posted).

Hello Wes,
In the web interface, the MessageList frame shows me...
"Wesley VogelX" - Oct 12 2003 6:03PM
"_Jan" - Oct 12 2003 6:55PM
"Wesley VogelX" - Oct 13 2003 1:34AM <-- (1)

....which agrees with (2)
|My post;
|Posting-Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 08:34:46 GMT
|[2:34 AM my time]
....yet (1) says 1:34AM.
In other words, one hour west of your time zone.
Pacific Standard Time (US & Canada) [PST] -0800 GMT
Pacific Daylight Time (US & Canada) [PDT] -0700 GMT
**Redmond, Washington, USA is on
Pacific Daylight Time [PDT] -0700 GMT.**
The date/time-stamp on posts using the web interface is
based on the local time in Redmond, Washington, USA.
Your newsreader indicates -0700 GMT for all
messages that were posted using the web interface,
and perhaps for *all* other posts as well. The
"-0700 GMT" indicates the frame of reference for
the date/time-stamp on posts.
To test that theory, the next time you read any message
that has
"Sender's E-mail: ]"
check the time zone.
For any other posts, do you always see -0700 GMT?
And do you have SBSI?

Hello Jan;
Thanks for the input. This CDO deal is confusing to me. Everybody is

Just CDO, not all posts. Copied and pasted the following. I tracked down
the country either using whois or the suffix in the e-mail address or from what
the poster said in the message. I get all kinds, i.e.
Sat, 11 Oct 2003 22:54:37 -0400 {Canada}
Sat, 11 Oct 2003 22:09:32 -0600 {US}
Sat, 11 Oct 2003 19:25:32 EDT {US}
Tue, 14 Oct 2003 18:18:07 MDT {US}

Sat, 11 Oct 2003 03:42:21 +0300 {Russia}
Fri, 17 Oct 2003 09:57:40 -0500 {US}
Fri, 17 Oct 2003 20:39:12 +0530 {New Delhi,India}
Mon, 13 Oct 2003 02:47:52 +0700 {INDONESIA}
Sun, 12 Oct 2003 13:22:30 +1000 {Kiev, Ukraine }
Mon, 13 Oct 2003 16:47:37 +0400 {Russia}
Fri, 17 Oct 2003 08:11:01 +0200 {Netherlands}

13 Oct 2003 17:22:27 +0000 (UTC) {UK}

Sun, 12 Oct 2003 13:23:17 +1000 {Australia}
I don't know how it is now, but Russia used to have eleven Time Zones.

I don't know what it is, so I doubt very much that I have it.
Please let me know what it is, as I doubt you are in reference to the

Hello Wes,
Your input is very helpful.
| This CDO deal is confusing to me.
| Everybody is
Prior to the severe disruptions in accessing these
newsgroups via the web interface earlier this month,
(I was locked out of windowsxp.customize for seven days)
the "Sender's E-mail:" field when [New Post]ing or
[Post Reply]ing was blank.
Since then, the web interface has been redesigned.
One change is that the default setting in the
"Sender's E-mail:" field is now
, in keeping with
the advice given in the recent posts - Subject:

Jan;
I appreciate your replies. My advice: use a real newsreader, dump CDO and
use OE. I have had no disruptions, the only problem I experienced was a
smaller number of posts. I have been practicing since Windows 3.11. Actually,
since Commodore C64 GEOS. :o) I practice every time I boot-up. ;-)

Jeff;
Thank you, oh, so very much for the information. I see now that it is,
"Just my 2¢ worth." I guess you owed me something for that advice. :o) I am
enrolled in a Sped Redin' Curse. This will take up most of my time. So I will
have to forego the SBS Practice. I am going out to my garage now to see if my
C64 is still out there.

I have 2-C64's, 1-SX64, 2 monitors, drives, all kinds of stuff that will
probably interest some archaeologist in 3000 years. :o)
After using IE and switching to OE, I don't see why anyone would use CDO.
I still prefer EIEIO!!!
