Suddenly, everytime I launch a new application, my Windows Installer box
pops up indicating a new installation! This is annoying and I would like a
fix for this. Using IE6 & WinXP Home. All help is appreciated. Thanks in
advance. Fran

Hmmmmmm....

There is a known issue with regard Office apps, but this is the first time
I've heard of the installer kicking off across the board.

Two most likely areas are either malware or hardware. Of the two, if it's
hardware you'd be seeing a lot of other issues. The hardware issue would
revolve around corrupted registry in memory and/or on HD. Malware, as
mentioned upthread, tends to be most likely, however I just had a thought.
What was the last piece of software you installed intentionally?

Walter...Recently installed Ad-aware6 by Lavasoft (anti spy software). I
also recently removed Earthlink's Total Access. Ever since then I am
getting the Installer popups with each new application. Is it time for a
system restore? Fran

Ad-Aware shouldn't have caused any problems. I drop it on client machines on
a regular basis. However if you're still with Earthlink, try reinstalling
then uninstalling Total Access. Make sure to reboot between each step.

Thanks Walter, I did a system restore (2 weeks back) and the Windows
Installer no longer pops up with a new application. So now my Earthlink
Total Access is back but disabled since I do not care for this program. All
in all my system is working fine again. Would you advise me to uninstall
Total Access again or should I just leave things alone? Your help is
appreciated. Fran

It sounds as if Total Access only partially uninstalled and/or left
something hanging in the registry. What you could try is to manually take
another system restore so that you're current, close all applications
including disabling AV then doing the uninstall on Total Access again. And
make sure to reboot the system immediately afterward.

Optionally if you're content to leave things as are, that's an option too.
