to anyone out there....
I was wanting to install windows xp professional on my older
computer....keep in mind it is about 3 years old...but really fast....and i
have enough ram and memory.....
but....Someone was telling me that if i install xp professional on to my
computer as an upgrade....you will lose all your old files such as stuff
that i have saved for the past couple of years....plus i have mega music
files that i do not want to lose.....now....is it true that i will lose that
stuff..or do i just need to make sure that all the files are out of the my
documents folder and any other folders concerned w/ possible
erasure....should i just make sure everything is in a c: drive folder of my
own naming or on the desktop or what....
because then i talked to someone else and they just said that as long as i
have it out of the my documents folders and my pictures folders etc. then i
should be okay....and that i will probably have to install certain programs
downloaded from the internet etc. but that it should be no problem..
someone give me a real answer...
thanks

You can go for an upgradation option instead of clean installation. But its
safe to backup the data when asked for. Take a copy of the My Documents
folder also.

The upgrade is designed to leave your data intact. That being said, nothing
with computers is foolproof. If you have data you do not wish to loose you
should create backups prior to upgrading. More food for thought, if this
harddrive is the only copy of said "important" data eventually you will
loose it. There is no question of "if" your harddrive will fail, only when.

You asked this yesterday in general, and the day before in help_and_support.
No one is going to email you. If you can't be bothered to come back for
replies then it's really not our problem...

As others have indicated, the upgrade function is designed to save all your
files and information. That being said, my advice is not to upgrade (load
WindowsXP over any other operating system) as you will be transferring junk
from your old OS to your new one, and this will cause problems down the
line. This junk may also prevent you from keeping the very files and
information you want to keep.
If I were you, I would backup whatever I wanted to keep and do a "clean
install" of XP. Since your system is about 3 yrs old, be sure to run the
update advisor on the installation CD first in order to determine any
hardware compatibility issues. Usually they can be corrected by updating
drivers. The installation disk also contains the tools to partition and
format your drive, thereby giving you a clean drive to load to. You can
reinstall whatever you desire later. This may seem like more work, but it
will save you considerable time and consternation down the line. Visit the
below listed site, and google "clean installation of Windows XP" for
additional information. Good luck.
