View Full Version : Problem installing XP upgrade

I have windows 98 SE and I am having problems installing XP. The process
will start and never finish. The pop-up that states how much longer starts
its countdown but after it progresses for a few minutes it hits a wall and
doesn't go farther on the time count no matter how long, even over night.
Also I can't manually run defrag. It starts and finally pops up a menu that
states that it has been interrupted and can't proceed. I am thinking that
something is running on my computer that I don't know about. I HAVE disabled
Norton AV. and have killed all working programs that I know about.
Any ideas will be welcomed.

I think you can try the XP readiness test on your system and check out for
the problem:

Mike,
The very first thing to do is insert the XP installation CD and run the
update advisor. That will let you know of any compatibility issues you may
have with hardware. Usually, all you'll have to do is update drivers.
Next, do a clean install. Back up all your important files and reformat and
partition your hard drive. Tools on the CD will do this. Don't load XP over
your Win98 OS. You can install your files after you've loaded Win XP. The
following sites should be helpful to you.

Greetings --
Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.
You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.
