View Full Version : SP1 (and Many Others) Will NOT Install After Activation

Motherboard is an ABit NF7-S 2.0 (NForce2 Chipset). CPU
is an Athlon 2500+. 1.5 GB of memory.

Issue: Patches will not install even after a complete
reload and activation. I've also gone through the system
cleaning with AdAware, SpyBot SnD, and Norton - it's
clean. I get an error saying that the catalog could not be
installed. Primarily on SP1a, but there are a number of
other patches that won't install either.

Not sure if this helps, but pulled up the event message
that keeps coming up when I try do do the install:
Catalog Database (1304) The database page read from the
file "C:\WINDOWS\System32\CatRoot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-
85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb" at offset 327680
(0x0000000000050000) for 4096 (0x00001000) bytes failed
verification due to a page checksum mismatch. The expected
checksum was 1205263197 (0x47d6db5d) and the actual
checksum was 3807370853 (0xe2efde65). The read operation
will fail with error -1018 (0xfffffc06). If this condition
persists then please restore the database from a previous
backup.

Some patches will install, but there are 7 (critical) that
will not.

Thought I heard somewhere that there is a folder you can
rename (other than CatRoot2) to fix the issue - anyone
know what it is or have any other suggestions?

Thanks

Joe

Is it possible that the updates that you're trying to install were corrupted
during download? I believe that a checksum mismatch indicates a corrupted
file.

I've tried them over 30 times - doubt corruption is an
issue. That's what I was thinking on the first shot,
though as well.

I'm assuming that your file system is NTFS (not FAT32), so file size
shouldn't be an issue. Another thing that comes to mind is a corrupted
pagefile (I believe the solution is to erase the pagefile.sys file, and
reboot, but please verify with someone else before doing so). You're not
getting the dreaded "Delayed Write Failed" message by any chance are you? If
so, that brings up a whole other number of possible causes.

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will
generate a new, clean folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.

Tried that already, but thanks for the suggestion.

You sir are a god. Did what you said, which then came up
with another error:

Catalog Database (1316) Database recovery/restore failed
with unexpected error -1018.

(a different error.... YAY)

SO, then I went about renaming the CatRoot2 folder, and
now it seems to work! (oh that was hellish - tried MANY
MANY times and MANY MANY different solutions and none that
worked until now...)

Thanks again!
