View Full Version : CD Drive Not Recognized

Trying to help a friend who is having problems with his Sony CRX216E CD
drive. He's running XP Home on a Dell system. He says the problem is that
the CD drive is no longer working. This problem has just arose as he was
able to use it up to this point. It's not recognized in My Computer and when
we look in Device Manager it has a yellow exclamation point next to it. I
suggested uninstalling it and reinstalling... which he say went fine with XP
saying it has the correct drivers. (Still not being recognized in My
Computer & yellow ! still in Device Manager)
He e-mailed this morning to say;
"When I search files for the CD, I place the arrow over the file name and it
reads: Location:D:\--but when I open the file and look at properties, it
reads Location C:\Documents."
I know this is a little "Wishy-Washy" as he's explaining all this via
e-mail. Would appreciate if anyone would have some suggestion on
troubleshooting the problem. I could always get back to him and ask him to
clarify any information that might be needed.
Many Thanks!!!

Did the PC come with Win XP or is it an upgrade as the Sony CD drives seem
to like Sony drivers, might check the Sony Support Web site for new drivers.
Also if a yellow mark is there, something is not happy. I would remove the
hardware profile totally and then in Control panel go to Add new hardware
and see if he has better luck.
I could not find a thing on this drive on Sony's site, the closest was for
the CRX215A
http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/crx215a1dwn.htm
On the Dell support site, it covers the drive in detail.
http://support.ap.dell.com/docs/storage/p58958/
There is alot of info on Google, but did not see anything too useful other
then users having problems with older versions of Nero and also saying the
drive is very sensitive to the type (brand) CD used
Hope this helps !

Tedd,
Thanks for your reply!!!
I spent a couple of hours yesterday searching Sony & Google, as you have
found nothing on Sony's site and plenty of mention on the CRX216E on Google,
though nothing specific to this problem. My original thoughts were that the
XP provided driver needed to be changed to one from Sony, but can't find it.
However, what's strange is my friend has been using the CD up till about a
week ago with no problems. Now, what's happened since then I do not know.
It's strange it's not showing up in My Computer even though XP says it's
installed correctly???
Maybe someone else might have some suggestions. Again, Thanks for your
reply!!!

Hi TK,
Yes I spent a good 2 hours between Sony, Dell, Google, Hotbot, Yahoo and
Microsoft and its strange that there are so many things on Google, but none
of them really say anything other then the specs. The other thing is why it
is not on the Sony site at all. From what little info I did get, it sounds
like it is made for XP. But that is weird it not showing up in "My PC"
actually maybe that is not so strange, my Sony Vaio laptop does not show a
CD drive either until I put a CD in it. I will keep my eyes open and if
anything useful comes up, I will post it here for you.

Hi,
Save the file below to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and
double click the file. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is
done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

This happens if there was a CD burning package, or possibly similar,
which added an extra item to the drivers, which has been lost. The
reference remains, and as the system cannot find that file it ignores
the device. This applies to the whole class of CD devices - so removing
and reinstalling an individual one does not help. To tidy up, get a
registry patch file, cdgone.reg, from
www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click on it and merge
it into the registry
You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you *do* use.

See Marfers notes (Code39) Save his website cause he has lots of answers as
does Kelly and Doug. go to www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/xp_notes.htm .
Kelly's Korner is my favorite.

That script was derived from the patch. I don't think anything was
added, but cannot guarantee that

Which in this particular case is not comprehensive. It leaves things

You can have a look at the upper and lower filters in the reg key below.
Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the

Many, Many Thanks to all who responded... Decided to let my friend use the
..vbs fix as it seemed a little easier to use. He said it restored the CD
drive right away.Been on computers a fairly long time and never would of
thought of that as the reason for the problem, guess we learn something new
everyday.
I would also like to express my thanks to the XP group as I come from Win98
general which I happen to think is the best group out there ;-))))
Again, Thanks!!!
TK.

Glad you have it worked out and thanks for the feedback. And yup, I have to
agree with you for Win98 Gen. I still miss working there with that bunch.

Alex,
Thanks for the response... Quick question, is the registry patch you have
recommended the same as the .vbs file Kelly recommended in her above post?
