View Full Version : Cached Domain Password Problem

I have run into a situation that I can not resolve. I have a machine with
XP SP1 that I use to connect to a corporate NT4 domain via a Nortel VPN
connection. When I log onto the machine, I use the domain level account
that was put on the machine when the machine was still hard wired to the
network. I use the domain account, the domain password and specify the
corporate domain name. Once my desktop comes up, I then initiate the VPN
connection and map drives and get my mail with no problem. I let my domain
password expire on accident and now I cannot get it back in sync with my
cached copy of the password on the machine. The old password still works on
the machine but once I connect via the VPN connection I must use the new
password to map drives.

I have tried changing my password while connected to the domain via the VPN
but the old password I provide does not take.

Any ideas on how to get the cached copy of the password back in sync?

you will have to be connected to the domain when logging on your machine as
your cached credentials are saved at this point. once you are logged onto
the machine, the cached credentials will not be touched. you have 2 options:
1 - physically connect your machine to the corporate network with the domain
and logon to your machine using your domain account. or 2 - at the xp logon
screen, check the box "logon using dialup connection," which will allow you
to logon to your domain across the vpn connection and, after successful,
will refresh your cached credentials.

Dan,

That is unfortunately what I was afraid of. I guess this means a trip to
the store to pick up a cheap modem just to clear the password issue. I was
hoping it was something as simple as the old Windows 9x days where you could
just delete the .PWL file and be good to go.

Thanks for the response.

well, that is one of the many reasons 9x shouldnt be used in a corporate
environment - its lack of security.
