View Full Version : Hotfixes slowing system down?

We have three Dell computers. All are running Windows XP
Pro. Two of them have Service Pack 1 installed, the third
one does not. Never the less, when I recently updated
with one of the latest Hotfixes, they all began to work
so slowly that they are practically useless.
I have heard that there may be some problems connected
with Service Pack 1 and memory management, and that many
hotfixes may slow the system down. If so, one should
think this slowing down process should have happened
gradually, but it did not. I also tried uninstalling
Service Pack 1 from one of the computers and it helped a
little bit.
Does anyone know what the problem(s) may be and
preferrably how to fix them?
Thank you!

this is likely due to the 811493 hotfix, which has known performance
slowdown issues when installed on xp sp1 machines (it should not effect
non-sp1 machines, though). if you remove this hotfix then you problems will
likely go away. ms is currently working on a fix and, when available, it
will be linked to this page:
