I read a lot of threads on the same topic. Did not come across any
that dealt with chkdsk and NTFS. So here I am, hoping that sombody
here might help me.

I have a 40 GB logical partition on a 160 GB disk on windows XP Pro (
SP1 ). Last 2 days I ve been seeing a message in the System tray (
right side of the task bar ) that there is an unreferenced file called
G:\????.
I did not do anything particular since I could not locate any file
called ???? in the G drive.
But then next time I reboted the system ( today ) when windows came up
it ran chkdsk and deleted almost all the files on the drive ?
That s almost all my data gone.
I tried various ways to recover teh data including system restore,
without any success.
Is there any chance for me.
I m willing to purchase software for this purpose.
Are there any good data recovery softwares out there. Do you have any
suggestions.
The data is there on the hard disk, since never wrote anything to this
disk again. Actually I havent done much with it after the apisode at
all. So I have confidence that with the help of some recovery utility,
I might see my precious data again.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

http://www.ontrack.com/ does data recovery. There are probably other places
locally that can help you out.

BTW, sounds like you had a virus. I honestly don't think you're going to
be able to handle this one yourself (no offense meant, of course).
