For your LAN connectoid, check the following properties:

- Is the TCP/IP protocol installed (which should be listed as bound to that
connectoid so you can use TCP/IP)?

- Under the properties for TCP/IP, is DHCP (dynamic host configuration
protocol) enabled? If not, you must using a static IP address and will have
to do all the manual configurations yourself, like designating a gateway and
DNS server.

- Under Advanced for TCP/IP properties, and under the WINS tab, is NetBIOS
over TCP/IP enabled (or set to automatic)?

- Is the "Client for Microsoft Networks" listed?

- Can you use ping to detect the other hosts by their machine name (rather
than by their IP address)? If your hostname is "alpha" and you have another
host named "bravo", can you run "ping bravo" from the alpha host and run
"ping alpha" from the bravo host?

- Do you have an account defined by the same name on the Windows XP host as
the account name you are logging under on the Windows 98 host so that user
connecting to the Windows XP can be given rights to use the shared resource
[assuming that the Everyone group is not already been given full rights)?

Do you have a software firewall on your Windows XP desktop that could be
blocking your laptop? Tried disabling the firewall temporarily to see if
you can use the printer on the desktop from the laptop?

Are you connecting the desktop and laptop directly together using a
cross-over cable? Or are they connected to a switch or hub? Or to a
router? If a router, are there any rules in the router that might isolate
the desktop or laptop to an "island" of the network that is blocked from
access by the rest of the intranetwork?
