control of program launching in IE

Hello, Microsoft gurus.

I'm trying to figure out how to launch the default
application for an AVI file, through Internet Explorer
(using an AVI as the target in a regular hyperlink).

I have a local html page that I want to use, to launch my
default AVI player.

Internet Explorer insists on opening the video using
built-in players. I just want it to launch the default
program, as defined in the Windows Explorer file type
association.
