View Full Version : Dual boot problem

Massa

Hi group

I have a system with two OS. WinME on C: (FAT32) and WinXP Home on D:(NTFS).
After running Check Disk from WinXP, I am not able to boot into WinME any
more. The boot menu shows both OS, but if I choose WinME I get a message
"Invalid System Disk". I am able to boot from the WinME startup floppy disk
and access all files on C: drive, but there is no way to load WinME.
Is there any way to repair the Invalid System Disk error without
reinstalling WinME and WinXP?
Is it possible to boot from WinME floppy, execute "sys c:" to be able to
boot only to WinME and after that use the WinXP CD to restore the dual boot?

Thanks in advance,

Mladen

Hi,

You probably will need to reinstall WinME, running the SYS C: command will
merely rewrite the boot files, this will not fix the problem. When WinME is
reinstalled, you need to boot the WinXP CD, run the Recovery Console and run
bootcfg /rebuild from the command prompt.

I guess it will be best to reinstall WinME. I was just hoping there was a
way of avoiding the reinstallation.

Thanks for your quick reply

Try adding this last line:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows ME"

Edited boot.ini as suggested, but now a new error message is displayed:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Seems that the edited line works only for Win2000/XP
Looks like I will have to reinstall WinME

Hi,

Actually, that error is from WinXP. Could you please give a full description
of your drive setup? Which partitions on which drives?

Hi,

I have 2 hard disks:
Drive 0 - only 1 partition FAT 32 - C
Drive 1 - with 2 partitions NTFS - D, G

Anyway, I tried to reinstall WinME over the existing installation, but was
unable to complete the setup because of the SUWIN error at 65% of setup. I
will just move my files from C to G, format C and perform a fresh install of
WinME.

Hi,

Just to say all problems are solved. Found a very useful article about
SUWIN, VERX.DLL error and re-installing WinME at
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/reinME.htm , performed a successful
reinstallation and there was no need to use the Recovery console for WinXP,
because the dual boot menu is still present and XP boots normally. Just had
to change the default OS

Thanks for the help
