on windows 98 it was very easy to install the same printer
twice, for example HP1200-A and HP1200-B so I used to
configure the printer A to load paper from the manual
feeder and the printer B (which is physically the same one)
from the default paper tray.

Xp doesn't let me install the printer twice and I can't
set up this helpful feature. How can I do it?

David, I copied this from subject just below that appears to be you posting
same question on this forum:

quote by Alan Morris: "Use the Add Printer Wizard. Open the Printers and
Faxes Folder. It's one
of the tasks or an icon in the folder if you view this in Classic mode. If
you do not see the driver you want because the driver is not included in XP
just use any driver. Agfa is the first on the list. When you set up the
printers be sure to name them uniquely. Change the driver to the one for
your printer if it's not in the default list. Open Printer Properties
/Advanced and select the correct driver, Apply then make the configuration
changes you need for the trays."
