is it possible to use the sound card and microphone as a telephone?
i DON"T mean an internet phone or a pc-to-phone.
i want to use the modem and the regular phone line that my pc is connected
to and to speak into the microphone, hear the other person from the speakers
and be able to answer phone calls with the computer.
is there a third party free app that can do that?
thank you
Eli

Your modem would have to be a voice-modem type. If so, there would be software
provided with it to handle the Windows and phoneline interface requirements.
Windows Phone Dialer is limited.. You must have a regular phone attached in
order to use it as a dialer. Refer to Windows Help for more details...look in
the Index for 'Phone Dialer, overview".

Hi, Eli.
Where in the world are you? In Jerusalem? Cairo? Pretoria? Either your
date or your time zone are set wrong in your computer.

Yes. Typically, modems sold as "voice" modems (as opposed to mere
data/fax modems) come with the necessary software and, usually, a wire
to connect the modem to the soundcard. Creative Labs, the Soundblaster
folks, market one for around $50.00. Much cheaper ones are available.

Never come across a wire between sound card and modem. However voice modems
have there own microphone and speaker sockets.

Really? Never seen the TAD input on a sound card either? TAD is Telephone
Answering Device, and it's where you would connect the modem to the
soundcard.

Interesting enough I may have seen a TAD/modem connection (not sure) but
many sound cards I have seen have additional sound inputs that would allow
the sound card speakers to be used but then the Mic would still need to be
plugged into the modems mic socket. Also HP computers may be set to go in
the sense that the microphone and speaker sockets work for the modem - you
would need to consult the manual or web site to be sure on this.

Here's a comment: A google search turns up all the info you need.
Try it out. It's so much more satisfying when you figure actually
learn it then when you have the answer spoon fed to you.
