Having recently purchased a new machine with XP Home Edition installed, I am
not able to find the Backup file which I thought should live in the system
tools folder.

Can anyone suggest why this might have happened, and how I might make good
the deficiency without needing to destroy all the settings I have already
established on Windows.

John Provan:
Backup is not installed by default in WinXP Home. Please see the
following...
"HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302894
If you are unable to find the Ntbackup.msi file on your CD, you can try
downloading it from
