I need a simple word processor to supplement Word 2002. I'd like to easily
use several open documents from two or more programs simultaneously, but
Note Pad isn't flexible enough. Can I specify Word Pad to open certain
documents (saved as .doc) so that I can keep basic formatting settings,
without having to launch the full might of Word 2002? (But leave Word as my
main word processor?)

Or should I look for a 'cut down' word processor from somewhere?

Cheers,

Chris

When in Word save as "rich text format" (.rtf) which can be read in WordPad.

Thanks for the pointer, Frank, but all documents saved in Word Pad are
tagged .doc if saved as RTF and then only open in Word 2002 (even though
they can be read by Word Pad).

I need to be able to use both programs - or another simple WP -
independently; so when a document is saved in Word Pad, it re-opens in Word
Pad - rather than Word (RTF) or Note Pad (plain text).

Cheers,

Chris

If you've created a document in WordPad, you shouldn't have any problem
opening it in WordPad again; there's nothing in saving it that would then
make it incompatible. Or am I misunderstanding something?

Are you sure you tried "save as"?

Yes, I used 'Save As'...

Say I write a document in Word Pad and save it as a Rich Text file. It saves
as a .doc Word file, complete with the MS Word 'Blue W' icon, and only opens
with MS Word.

If I save the same document in Word Pad again, as plain text (losing
formatting etc.), it saves as a text document, complete with the little
'spiral bound notebook' icon, and only opens with Note Pad.

Do I gather from the rest of you that you can save and open documents to and
from Word Pad easily enough? (Are you all MS Word users as well?)

Cheers,

Chris

.... and if I manually change the name of a .doc MS Word document to an .rtf
document, it still only opens in MS Word (even though it is still obviously
compatible with Word Pad)...

You couldn't do it manually. The difference is the rtf file doesn't keep all
the junk Word creates (or recreates if it is a rtf file). It's better to
keep all files as rtf rather then doc so they can be use with each.

If it changes rtf to doc when you save you probably have something set up to
do just that.

Go to explorer (not internet explorer)>tools>folder options. Look for rtf
and doc extensions and check the file types.

You beauty, Frank! I would never have thought of that... All .rtf files were
set to open in Word 2002 and I was simply able to change the 'Opens with'
option to 'Word Pad'. Marvellous!

Special thanks to you, Frank (and to D.Currie) - it's funny how 'little'
things can be 'big' problems. But now it's sorted :-)

Cheers,

Chris
