Upgrading a hard drive

I got a brand new hard drive yesterday an 80 gig and i
copied all the files to my new harddrive but when i
booted up my computer with it in it didnt go past the
start up it doesnt load the users or anything I dont know
if there is something i can do about it or not i luckily
kept my old hard drive but i want to know can i fix it or
do the copy over in dos cause i did it first in windows
cause thats what it came with

Ever heard of punctuation/sentences/spelling/grammar/capital letters?!
Posting without any regard to the common conventions of English doesn't help
anyone - either the person attempting to assist you, because they're going
to give up attempting to decipher what you're attempting to impart - or you,
because you're not going to receive much/any assistance.

If you merely copied everything across, of *course* it's not going to work -
you've not installed anything! All that's on the disk is a jumble of random
files. Suggest you boot from the Windows CD, format the drive and install it
from scratch. You may first like to set up your old drive as a slave, so you
still have access to the files.

First of all, ignore all posts by Pernicious X. Twit, the nuisance of the
newsgroups.

The trouble with copying files is that you don't end up with a bootable
drive. This wasn't too hard to do with Win98 using the freeware xxcopy and
then using fdisk to make the boot partition active on the new drive.
Apparently this isn't as easy in XP.

Several programs exist for copying from drive to drive. I've never used it
but CasperXP claims to do this:
