View Full Version : Lexmark X83 Multifunction!!!

December 5th 03, 12:59 AM
Desperately looking for a fix guys.

I have to admit that my new Lexmark 83 multifunction that I use on my XP Pro
pc has totally stuffed me.

Upon purchase I found that it loads a file called ACMonitor_X83.exe at
startup, and when it does, I lose all throughput on the my dial-up internet
connection!!! ie. connect to my ISP ok, but nothing can get through. Disable
ACMonitor_X83.exe and the internet functions fine. Thing is, if the file
doesn't load at startup I can't use the printer!!!! Have to re-enable,
reboot then print. Total bull****.

I contacted Lexmark support who said contact your modem supplier as it's
their fault, crappy drivers. No change after updating of drivers, so Lexmark
gave me some initialisation strings to try. Net effect, my hdd then failed
to recognise my modem any more, so no internet whatsoever. ****ed off.

Got a new hdd, fresh install of XP, borrowed a friends modem (totally
different brand), and voila, SAME DAMN THING!! NO INTERNET UNLESS I ENABLE
ACMonitor_X83.exe and reboot.

I can't see how this is a modem issue!! I can only think somewhere in the
software for Lexmarks printer is an instruction that has an effect on the
modem and all throughput, including access to the pop3 server.

Does anyone have any ideas what's going on with this damn thing before I
throw it through Hardly Normals shop window??!!

sounds like it is keeping the port open waiting for an
incoming call ? call you disable autoanswer or something
similar ?

perhaps try again but before you reboot gop into task
manager and stop the acmonitor from running and then see
what happens

Your broadcast posting makes you a little suspect, but here
is the bad news anyway.

Issues with your "new" Lexmark X83 should be no surprise!
If you visit the Lexmark web site, you will learn that this
product was "discontinued and withdrawn from marketing in
the United States on September 23, 2002" (after what may
have been a very short product life since the Getting
Started Guide is dated March 2001).

Sounds like you bought a closeout item. Hope you got a
really good deal.

There are other printers at the same price with the same features. If I were
in your position, I'd take it back and exchange it for something else. If
everyone did that, you'd see problems like this stop occuring so often!

What if...

You disable Acmonitor. Place a shortcut to it on your desktop or in your
Quick Launch bar. Double click the shortcut when you need the Lexmark. Will
activating Acmonitor this way give you access to the Lexmark okay or does it
fail too? When finished, use Task Manager to "end process" on acmonitor so
that you have your internet back?

If a restart looks like it is still necessary, you can save a bit of time by
logging off and logging back on again.

Sorry for the broadcast but I was getting little response from the usual
groups I frequent for these sorts of issues.

I'm in Australia and why o' why do I get the feeling that Lexmark dumped
this crappy product here, when they knew it was a POS.

It was a good deal funny enough.

As a matter of interest was the X73 withdrawn as well? They seem to be
including that in a number of package deals around the place at the moment.

Signed, very glumly,

Pedro.

Thanks, it appears your work around is working. Just wait and see how stable
my system remains.

Will keep my fingers crossed for you, Pedro. For what it's worth, I used
this workaround previously to manage an unruly scanner on one of my systems.
